Formatting rules
Formatting decides how your dictations read: one style for all apps, a built-in rule for email, and your own rules for the places that need something different.
Styles
| Style | What it does |
|---|---|
| Standard | Full capitals and punctuation. |
| Casual | Capitals stay, fewer full stops. |
| Lowercase | No capitals, minimal punctuation. |
All apps
The All apps style applies to every dictation, except in apps that have their own rule. You can add a short custom prompt on top of the style, such as “Use British spelling.” Rules for particular apps add their own instructions on top of this one.
The email rule
A built-in rule shapes dictations in your email apps and webmail. Built-in rules can be switched off but not deleted.
Your own rules
- Choose Add rule and give it a name, such as “Chat apps”.
- Add apps. Apps appear in the list after you’ve dictated in them.
- Add websites, such as
mail.google.com, for dictation in the browser. - Pick a style, and optionally a custom prompt. Keep it short and specific, because it shapes every dictation there.
Raw text
Turn on Raw text for exactly what you said, with no AI cleanup. Your style still applies. Without cleanup, accuracy can drop and dictionary words are harder to get right. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, cleanup runs on the Mac with no key; otherwise it uses the AI provider you set up in Settings › AI. Raw text needs neither.
